Guillermo Habacuc Vargas, a pseudo artist based in Costa Rica, payed two children to catch a homeless dog which he later chained in a gallery. He made the dog suffer and starve to death in the gallery, in front of the viewers. Guillermo Habacuc Vargas says the dog was ill and would die anyway. He refused requests to give food or water to the animal and didn't let the viewers feed the dog. Some people tried to convince him to free the dog but he rejected all the requests, claiming death of this animal is his 'work of art'.

In that event, (in which the dog died) he was chosen to represent his country in the Central-American Biennial of Honduras 2008.

This just isn't right.

I call for everyone to boycott Guillermo Habacuc Vargas and his actions.
Please don't let him be part of the Art society.

For those who don't see anything wrong in this kind of approach: next time it can be a human - your neighbour, your cousin or sibling, your spouse or yourself.

i just read this and i find it really interesting.
you cant stop art - he has provoked so many people, and its a extreme way to provoke people, and i find it genius. to me he got the chance to show something brilliant. yes its cruel. but why?
its cause we know that the dog was in pain - but the dog is dead and free, its cruel to the people who are still here and still feel its pain. and someday it will be a human. you cant stop people from killing themselves or others unless you are there. that have become our nature.
i know i sound cold, its not like i want it to happen. it would break my heart, but im just accepting it. i wish it didn't happen, but it did. maybe it will never happen again.

I can see what his point might have been too, but there are dozens or ways to draw attention to this subject without hurting anyone.

I know it's impossible to reach people without radical actions sometimes. But this kind of provocation is not very effective if it comes to changing the way people think - of course it does make people talk about the 'artist' but it's a very cheap way of drawing attention to 'art'.

You sound rather naive, saying one can't stop art.
Vargas' idea is not as sophisticated as some may think. The message itself is not original or new.

i understand you too.

i think its about choices, and i haven't made my choice yet. so my opinion is not worth much thought anyway.

and i think its more naive to think that you can change peoples minds, cause there is always, always someone who doesn't listen.
its about the way people are built, the world has a system called balance.
so to me its you who sound naive. cause there will be a long time untill its peace all over the world. but i dont say that we shouldn't try, or anything.

but yeah, the message itself is not original or new.
and i do agree about the sophistication, but in the end its how you chose to see it. i choose not to care at this moment. distance works too:P

humans are not part of the balance anymore. nearly everything we do nowadays is is based on destroying balance of the environment.

i never said i want to change anyone's minds. it's not about not thinking about certain things. it's about no turning in to nazi-aliens, traveling through space to torture and murder. ;P

if we're not a part of the balance - how can we destroy it?
(because we can do a huge impact on the balance, ergo, we are a part of the balance)

hehe.
i hope too there will be no nazi-aliens;)

art is not "show and tell". Vargas' way of getting his message across is cruel, cheap, and hideously calculating. his is megalomania. not anymore art, really. but art for selfish reasons - his own fame and notoriety.

sure he can claim it's art. and its art in the sense that it does evoke violent emotions from viewers. Yet he can't claim to be the artist. he is simply part of the medium. the real artist was the dog.

fuckit. too many people are simply after the limelight this days... I signed the petition. people like that deserve to be shipped off somewhere... like alpha centauri... NOT awarded!

Dead-Mime. I do disagree with the statement that art is only about creation tho. Artists are naturally creator-destroyers. Brahmashivas.

it's no excuse for Vargas' though. He's not an artist. He's just another attention-seeker, craving fame.

A Step Into Oblivion

Dreams of things that will never be,
Songs of thoughts only I can hear,
Leave me be, to sleep forever,
To dream my dreams,
And sing my hymns,
Of things that will never be...

thank you for sharing your thoughts.

i think the times of destruction art should be over already.

i think Beuys' idea of art as a quasi-shamanistic ritual was great and worth of continuation.

I'm not from any of Americas, but want to sign the petition. Can I? If I can, explain me, please, what a "PaУs" means in it's form?

It's done! Thank you for popularizing this. People often behave cruelly, but exposing that cruelness is breaking all borders of morality

And I am appreciate a lot for the :+fav:!!!
